The Long Goodnight: A Film About Phil Collins DVD

"In 2004 I came to a major decision in my life. I decided to stop my seemingly endless days of touring. I had been on the road for the last 30 years, and now with 2 young children I decided that enough was enough. It was time to say goodnight. This film documents the last stage of that goodnight tour. It covered many places I’d never played before, and some places NO ONE had played before. The result was that we encountered many remarkable obstacles. Filmmaker Anthony Mathile was with me from the first day of rehearsals to the last date in Prague. Therefore he captured many moments, good/bad… happy/sad. For me it is a film of mixed emotions, but it is also a film that touches me more than anything I’ve done before.”

WALT DISNEY RECORDS RELEASE THE CAST ALBUM FROM TARZAN
Features music and lyrics by Oscar® and six-time GRAMMY® Award winner PHIL COLLINS

"Gorgeous and imaginative. It's the flying apes and title character that people have come to see, and the show doesn't disappoint. Phil Collins' music includes some terrific songs." -- Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

"Sensational! The most visually enthralling show since 'The Lion King!'" -- Richard Zoglin, Time Magazine

The cast album for TARZAN®, the new musical presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, which opened on Broadway on May 10th, 2006, was released by Walt Disney Records on June 27. Oscar® and six-time GRAMMY® Award winner Phil Collins has written the music and lyrics, expanding his songs for Disney's film into the complete theatre score. The album also features a special treat - Collins performs"Everything That I Am," one of the nine new songs he penned for the musical.

More than 90 years ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs introduced TARZAN® to the world in the October 1912 issue of "All Story Magazine." The character was an instant sensation. Since then, he has been featured in 26 authorized novels and more than 44 motion pictures, including Disney's 1999 film.

Phil Collins composed five songs for the 1999 film, "Disney's TARZAN®," including "Two Worlds, One Family," "Strangers Like Me," and"You'll Be In My Heart," which won the 2000 Academy Award® for Song of the Year, spent 10 weeks as #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart, and was #1 in 14 countries. The soundtrack went double platinum, while the film went on to instant international success, grossing $447 million worldwide, with subsequent DVD sales in excess of 13 million units.

Collins, who makes his Broadway songwriting debut with TARZAN®, has written music and lyrics for nine new songs for the Broadway production, in addition to his film score.

Although he has directed in his native Ireland, Bob Crowley makes his Broadway directorial debut with TARZAN®. Crowley, whose recent work includes his Tony Award®-winning scenery for Aida and his acclaimed design on Mary Poppins in London, has been praised for creating expressionistic, poetic environments for his productions, and brings that depth of artistry to the world of TARZAN®. Tony Award®-winner David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), has written the book, adapted from the screenplay by Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and based on the novel, Tarzan of the Apes, by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Josh Strickland makes his Broadway debut as Tarzan. The production also stars Jenn Gambatese (All Shook Up , Hairspray ) as Jane, Merle Dandridge (Rent, Jesus Christ Superstar, Aida) as Kala, Shuler Hensley (Tony®, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Olivier Award winner for his performance as Jud Fry in Oklahoma!) as Kerchak, Chester Gregory II (Hairspray, The Jackie Wilson Story) as Terk, Timothy Jerome (Disney's Beauty and the Beast , Tony® and Drama Desk nominated for Me and My Girl) as Professor Porter and Donnie Keshawarz (Taboo, TVs "Lost,""24" and "The Sopranos") as Clayton. Daniel Manche and Alex Rutherford will alternate in the role of Young Tarzan.

TARZAN® currently is in production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 West 46th Street) in New York City. For ticket information, please contact Ticketmaster at 212-307-4747 or www.ticketmaster.com or visit www.tarzanonbroadway.com. The Walt Disney Records cast album will be in stores on June 27, 2006 for a suggested retail price of $18.98. All Walt Disney Records and Buena Vista Records audio products also can be ordered by visiting www.DisneyRecords.com.

Given the ongoing controversy about the Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, Phil's management have released the following official statement:

PARR STREET STUDIOS CONTINUES TO OPERATE AS A STUDIO

The History Of Parr Street Studios - The building in Parr Street was purchased in 1991 by the Pension Fund as a property investment after being approached by a well known local producer/studio operator. The building was converted into a recording studio with support facilities on the upper floors at a significant cost. After a few years the operators of the studio went out of business and rather than let the studio cease the Pension Fund Trustees, at the urging of the majority of the Fund's beneficiaries, took on the running of the studio hoping to be able to make enough of a profit to pay the rent. Not only did this prove to be impossible but in addition to not receiving any rent the studio lost another £100,000 a year and this has remained the position for the last few years despite the efforts of everyone involved and has accumulated a loss of £2 million.

In 2005 in an effort to increase the potential value of the building, planning consent was applied for to convert the building for other uses. This triggered several approaches to see if the freehold could be purchased, one of which was a consortium headed by Thomas Lang, who was one of the tenants in the building operating a bar on one of the upper floors. This Lang consortium offered £1.2million which the Trustees felt was on the low side bearing in mind the potential increase in value if planning was given and as the Lang consortium swore that their intention was to continue to run the building as a music studio, the Trustees asked that they agree to share any increase in the value of the building in the event that planning was given and that the building was subsequently sold or developed in the following ten years. THIS THEY REFUSED TO DO. This led the Trustees to suspect that this could indeed be their intention.

In February 2006 after a series of negative press comments and local political pressure generated by Mr Lang and his associates, the Trustees reluctantly agreed to sell the building for £1.3 million and to include the studio equipment at no cost on the basis that they would share any increase in value in the event of a sale or development of the building within four years.

In March 2006 the Lang consortium tried to reduce the amount to be paid. At which time another party who had not previously expressed interest in the property approached the Trustees and an offer of £ 1.4 million plus the value of the studio equipment was immediately made.

The Trustees nevertheless decided that in the interests of keeping the studio going (as the consortium continued to swear was it's intention) to accept a revised offer from the consortium of £1.35 million including the equipment but at the insistence of the consortium the Trustees had to drop the right to benefit from any increase in the value of the site in the event of a re-sale or a planning gain. It was at this point, when the consortium was asked whether or not they would take on the existing tenants and staff, that they asked the Trustees to serve notice on the tenants and staff prior to the completion of the sale. This was something that the Trustees were very reluctant to do.

Just before the exchange of contracts the Trustees were advised by a third party that they had been offered the freehold for £2 million and that the property would be on the market in four weeks' time, which was exactly the same time at which the sale by the Trustees was to be completed.

Throughout the last twelve months every time it looked as though the consortium were not going to be able to buy the property at a favourable price, members of Genesis, Hit & Run Music and it's employees have been the victims of a sustained campaign of half-truths, insults, accusations of greed and outright lies orchestrated by Thomas Lang and his friends through the media, both local and national and the internet. After effectively subsidising the studio to the tune of £2million over the last ten years and even then trying to arrange a private deal with the consortium it has become very apparent as to who is being greedy in this case. It seems that the folks of the consortium want a free lunch as well as a free dinner but also want to steal the knives and forks too!!

Consequently the Trustees have decided to withdraw the building from the market and contrary to the rumours and half truths placed in the media by local vested interests, Parr Street Studios will not be closing but will continue to be run by the present owners under a new management company. Although the staff have been advised that their present employment will cease at the end of June it is anticipated that most of them will be employed by the new management company. With regard to the rest of the building a review is to take place as to the best commercial use of the upper floors and it is anticipated that some changes will be made.

Statement released on behalf of the Pension Fund Trustees.

Phil has asked for this statement to be published here:

Phil and Orianne Collins have decided to separate. They have been living separately since the beginning of the year and both cite the fact that they have been growing apart for some time now and this has put too much pressure on their relationship. Consequently they have decided in the interests of their two children that it is better to separate. They are both very sad that it should come to this but have as their priority the welfare and happiness of their children and are determined to remain friends and be loving parents to them.

To minimise the upset to their children Phil and Orianne ask the media to respect their privacy and their children's privacy during this sensitive time. Mr Collins will continue to live in Switzerland to be near to the children.

Simon Collins' new album

Phil's son Simon has just released his second album "Time For Truth" and is gearing up for the tour to promote it. You can hear it, the new album and his last release are both available online along with the brand new video for the lead off single "Man On TV".

Phil's long time friend and bass player Leland Sklar was recently on tour promoting his band Barefoot Servants and their new album. For more information about the band go to their web site Barefoot Servants (you will need Flash installed) or to Atom Records, their label. You can buy their new album here.

Lee (as he is known to his friends) has kindly offered to answer fans' questions about his career and his work with Phil. To put a question to Leland Sklar follow this link.

No matter what type of music you listen to or where in the world you live, you've probably heard or seen one or another of the Barefoot Servants. Individually (and collectively as Barefoot Servants) Jon Butcher, Ben Schultz, Leland Sklar and Neal Wilkinson have provided music and music production for some of the world's most important and notable artists. In their roles as producers, touring musicians, song writers, recording artists and composers, Barefoot Servants have been involved with artists and projects such as: Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Crosby Stills & Nash, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Belinda Carlisle, B.B. King, James Taylor, Mike + The Mechanics, Cher, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Robert Plant, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Joe Cocker, Randy Newman, American Idol, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Hughleys, and HBO's Deadwood.

The Servants were formed in 1993 as an idea hatched by guitarists Jon Butcher and Ben Schultz. Having been introduced to legendary bass player Lee Sklar by a mutual friend, the studio veterans (along with session drummer Ray Brinker) began recording their debut CD, Barefoot Servants, at Capitol Records Studio A in Hollywood, CA. The CD was released in 1994 to critical and commercial success.

Having completed one US tour in support of the first CD, life intervened and the Servants became the victims of their own individual success. Barefoot Servants found themselves eyeball deep in other artists album projects, commercial film projects, network television and international concert touring for the next 10 years.

Then in 2004, Ben, Lee and Jon reconvened around an unrelated studio project and as luck would have it, the camaraderie was still there. Enlisting ace studio musician and drummer Neal Wilkinson to round out the quartet, Barefoot Servants were re-born and back in the studio to record the follow-up to its highly regarded debut CD.

Simply titled Barefoot Servants 2, the new disc picks up where the first CD left off but surpasses it in terms of sonic quality and song writing maturity. The Servants took full advantage of time and resources to record more than 30 songs over an 18 month period. Recorded at Barefoot Sound Studios, Servants 2 is a classic mixture of all of the coolest influences which have characterized the Servants individually for more than a decade.

Barefoot Servants, along with artists such Prince, have elected to primarily self-distribute their new CD, making it available at their own web site www.barefootservants.net. Jon says, "We've decided that we're done with handing over the lion's share of sales to major corporations. It's an old way of doing business that makes no sense from an artist's point of view."

Released by independent ATOM Records, Barefoot Servants 2 is the best of nouveau-classic rock, presented in a trend-setting format certain to engage any listener from yesterday to today. The band plans to tour again in 2006.

Phil on Live 8:

"It has come to my attention that various sources have started to speculate on my involvement in "Live 8". All I can say is that I have not been asked to participate, and indeed cannot if I were asked. In fact I know nothing about it.

I wholly support the principle of the event but, as I said, I have not been approached, and will not be available at that time. I am in touch with Bob G, and have narrated his own "Live Aid" special for radio. So it is absolutely nothing personal. I love him dearly. I have done numerous interviews over the last 12 months celebrating both "Band Aid" and "Live Aid", and I was very proud to have been involved with both events. So, if you see my name linked with this event, by all means support it, but don't expect me to be there singing."

Phil Collins talks briefly about the new Genesis Video Show DVD and the triple CD Platinum Collection:

ON THE VIDEO SHOW DVD

Are you pleased with the overall result of the new DVD and were there any promotional films available which were not used, ie Man On The Corner?

"I'm pleased with it overall. It's great to have the clips in one place and looking as good as they can !! There probably are a few like Man on the Corner, that were left off but that particular one was filmed at a gig at the Savoy Theatre in NYC on tour.... and it doesn't stand up as well as the others from a video quality perspective."

Looking back over all the videos/promos you did, is there one particular video that personally you was proud?

"Without a doubt Jesus He Knows Me is my favourite. We all performed very well in that one, and it still makes me laugh. I think Jim Yukich and Paul Flattery as a production team knew us so well, we relaxed around them.... we laughed so much."

What will the next project to be released onto DVD be?

"I have no idea, I didn't know about this one till it was almost finished !!!"

Is there anything that you couldn't or didn't include on the videos DVD that you would have liked to ?

"The Drum Duets.... no just kidding, unless I'm forgetting something, I think they're all on there..."

What video stands out the most on the DVD as the one you found the most amusing ?

"Well as I said.... Jesus.... but I Can't Dance, particularly my Michael Jackson bit at the end, looking for his car keys, is very funny to me. I also really love Invisible Touch. We just basically mucked about for a day in this huge space. Again with Jim and Paul, they made it easy for us. I mustn't forget though that Stuart Orme who did the Mama and Illegal Alien clips was also very good. The Alien clip is still very funny."

ON THE PLATINUM COLLECTION

With such a large repertoire of music, how did you face the challenge of track selection for the Platinum Collection?

"Well I have to say, I only found out about this collection when a journalist told me !!! Everyone thought that everyone else had told me about it. So when it comes to the choice it was pretty much decided by the time someone turned my light on. I did suggest that In The Quiet Earth and Cinema Show should go on, and the guys took my point. I think it spans the decades pretty well, but with a long career like ours, everyone agreeing on the inclusions is pretty difficult. I think by and large, we all are on the same page with this."

What do the guys think of Nick's remixes on the platinum collection? Do they agree that some of the tracks have a new lease of life?

" I think they do. They don't differ that much from a mix point of view, but they do sound like they've been dusted off with a newer sonic look."

Did they feel under pressure to put the singles and hits of the Platinum collection, rather than making it a true 'best of' Genesis?

"Difficult to answer because there is so much material.... I think we all agreed that this was a best of and not just the hits. Obviously some people might be surprised by what we'd include as our favourites in spite of them being hits !! I know we all feel very strongly about things like I Can't Dance and No Son of Mine.... and they were hits. Is Suppers Ready on it ?!?!? I can't remember.... if it is then we were obviously spreading the net wider than just the hits."

ON BOTH

How about some much needed insight into why the Platinum Collection CD/Video Show DVD has been delayed until February 2005 in Japan and a still yet undetermined date in 2005 for North America?

"This is a Smith question I think. Whatever the real reason, I'm pleased because it doesn't compete with my new stuff...The Love Songs and the Final Tour DVD !!! It's crazy, and I've said so loud and clear, to have so much material out at the same time. It's also not fair on the fans, who can't resist buying them for their collection. I've mentioned it on my site."

Would you have preferred to have seen an Archive III (which apparently Atlantic had originally intended but later scrapped) with previously unreleased studio outtakes and rare live material as opposed to a collection of previously released recordings a la the Platinum Collection?

"I'm not sure what's left, other than work-in-progress multitracks of songs from the studio as we were writing them, like Mama. If someone had the time and will power to go through all the cassettes and DATs I recorded throughout our career as songs came together, there would be a great couple of CD's there."

There is talk that EMI will release archive material in the future. Do you have any involvement in this process? If so, what? How will material be selected?

"I'll be involved if someone TELLS ME ABOUT IT !!!"

ON HIS SOLO CAREER

What is on your schedule for new work - solo, Disney, other?

" I'm enjoying doing nothing at the moment...at least musically nothing. Having a new baby is keeping me very busy, trying to do my bit on the night feeds, and there is only so much I can do to help with that as Orianne is breast feeding !!! After Xmas I'll be starting in the studio I guess, writing for me or the Musical. Most of the songs are written for Tarzan the Musical, but it's an ever developing saga, so you're never really finished till it's in the Theatre, and even then it can change. Unlike a film. There is a Tarzan 2 film, which should not be confused with the Musical. Its a direct to DVD story of Tarzan as a 5 year old. A side story, if you like, from when he was a young kid. I've written 2 new songs for that, one of which will also feature in the Musical. There won't be an album from it though. We've also reworked Son of Man a little."

Friday, 10th December

Phil and Orianne's new baby was announced by the man himself on the Phil Collins Forum:

"Mathew Thomas Clemence arrived safely Dec 1st.... at 13.53pm .... 3k 210..... Mother and baby doing great, and Father over the moon....."

An official statement then followed:

Phil, Orianne and Nicholas Collins welcomed Mathew Thomas Clemence into the world on Dec.1st 2004 in Geneva. Phil said "We'd been trying for another brother or sister for Nicholas for ages and we're absolutely thrilled it's a boy. His brothers and sisters are over the moon. We are a very happy family !!!"

At right you can see the first official of the new arrival and beaming parents.

PHIL COLLINS “LOVE SONGS…” COLLECTION

Release Date - October 25TH 2004
Catalogue Number - PHILCDX 2

Following the phenomenal success of THE PLATINUM COLLECTION (over 200k sales to date), Virgin Catalogue announces the forthcoming release of a special double-disc collection from Phil Collins, entitled LOVE SONGS: A COMPILATION… OLD AND NEW. Spanning more than two decades, the set gathers Collins’s signature ballads together with personal favourites, rarities, and previously unreleased live performances.

“This is a collection of love songs that I’ve either written or co-written and that I consider to be amongst my best work,” says Collins, “in addition to songs that have been written and admired by me from a distance, whilst secretly wishing that I had written them! There are also some songs here that I feel extremely close to, but were missed the first time around because of circumstances beyond their control.”

LOVE SONGS is highlighted by such top-charting hits as One More Night, Against All Odds, A Groovy Kind Of Love, Two Hearts, Do You Remember?, Can’t Stop Loving You and a live version of Separate Lives. The set also includes You’ll Be In My Heart (from the Walt Disney film, Tarzan), which earned Collins the triple crown of an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy.

This 25-song collection features Collins’s moving renditions of standards by other composers, including his version of Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim’s Somewhere from West Side Story, a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s I’ve Been Trying, live performances of the Temptations’ My Girl, Irving Berlin’s Always, the Jerome Kern/Dorothy Fields classic, The Way You Look Tonight and a sound check recording of True Colours.

Among the other highlights is the previously unreleased Tearing And Breaking, co-written by Scottish singer/songwriter John Martyn and Collins and originally recorded in 2001 during the sessions for the TESTIFY album. LOVE SONGS also gives fans the opportunity to revisit some perhaps less famous but certainly no less favored moments – among them such gems as This Must Be Love, If Leaving Me Is Easy (both from Collins’s first solo album, 1981’s FACE VALUE), Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away, Can’t Turn Back The Years, I’ve Forgotten Everything, and Testify.

The career of Phil Collins is one that, by any measure, stands among some of the most prolific in modern music history due to his talents as drummer, singer, composer and producer. From art rock beginnings to huge pop stardom and from big band leader to soundtrack master it has been an exceptional musical life spanning over three decades, some 100 million solo albums, (250 million if you count his work with Genesis), seven Grammy Awards and an enviable string of hits.

DVD News

Work is nearly complete on the DVD of Phil's European Tour. Nick Davis has been putting the finishing touches to the project at a studio on London's South Bank. A sneak preview last week showed both performance and recording to be of the highest standard. Recorded in Paris, the huge audience and Phil and the band are clearly enjoying themselves enormously as they perform Sussudio at the end of the set. At one hilarious point, Phil nearly disappears bodily into the crowd when a most enthusiastic lady grabs him and won't let go as he involves the audience in a chorus singalong.

The sound is superb and the picture quality crystal clear. Release is expected later this year - and expect a lot of extra goodies on the DVD to make it an invaluable addition to your PC collection.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY AND ENJOY OWNING A LIMITED EDITION PRINT TAKEN FROM AN ORIGINAL PAINTING FEATURING PHIL COLLINS?

The charity Hope for Tomorrow - helping families cope with cancer - was launched last December with The Art of Music Exhibition (an exhibition of original paintings by Juan Carlos Ferrigno depicting legends from the world of music including Phil Collins). The exhibition culminated in a Gala Dinner and Charity Auction. The original of Phil went for £3500 in the auction.

Following the success of the exhibition we have produced a limited edition worldwide print (500) of Phil Collins taken from the original painting. These prints are individually numbered and hand signed by both the artist and Phil Collins. A certificate of authenticity is provided with each print which includes a photograph of Phil signing the prints. Both Phil's charity Little Dreams Foundation and Hope for Tomorrow will benefit from the sale of these prints.
