52 Year Old Woman Who Wants to Learn to Play the Drums!

Good morning,

I am a 52 year (young) woman who has loved the drums since I was a small child. I have always wanted to learn to play them (play other drum types such as the Djembe) but have never had the opportunity to learn otherwise.

I am now diagnosed with a degenerative disease and mortality has smacked me in the face. I want to LEARN to play the drums before I am no longer able to do so. Phil Collins has been my favorite drummer for many, many years and is an inspiration to me in many ways.

I would like any suggestions from him or those close to him, about learning (drum lessons themselves are too expensive for me at this point) how to play and how I should start. Thank you most kindly for your time and your assistance.

With kind regard,

~Gypsie~

I've had a similar desire all

I've had a similar desire all my life, and last year I buckled down and bought a Toca Djembe from a local fair.  You can buy them online at tocapercussion.com.  I just dabble now and again, so I'm far from the foremost authority on the subject.

However, the best advice I can give is, if you're a good visual learner & you want to learn his playing style, to go back and watch concert footage of him playing the drums.  I watched the Final Farewell Tour, especially Take Me Home as it provided some good technique footage.  If you don't own any of the videos, you can get them through Netflix.  There's also plenty of footage & instructional videos available on YouTube.

While watching Phil (or another instructor) is good for basic instruction, unless you fully want to imitate their style, the best way to learn is just diving in and playing around.  It's how you find your own style and your own rhythm.  I hope this helps a little.

Blessings!
